2009 Summer Reading Program
What is the summer reading program anyway?
A summer reading program is a weird name for what is basically a SERIES of RELATED programs just for teens combined with some super easy reading requirements. And, you get to win cool raffle prizes.
Let's face it, you have summer reading assignments from school, right? Why not win cool prizes and get to particiapte in awesome programs just for doing them?
How does it work?
- Register for the summer reading program at the Newport Public Library (NPL) either in person at the Young Adult (YA) or Reference desks or e-mail your name, address, phone number, e-mail address, school and grade to nptya@newportlibraryri.org. Registration begins Monday, June 1 and continues through August 4.
- Read at least 6 books between July 5 and August 13.

- Complete an NPL Book Form for each book you read. Forms are available from the YA or Reference desks at NPL or they can be downloaded. Forms can be turned in at the YA or Reference desks or they can be e-mailed to nptya@newportlibraryri.org.
- Attend fun activities to express the true you - art, cooking, and scrapbooking - just to name a few.
- Earn a spot at our end of the program pizza party by reading at least 6 books.

ACTIVITIES
All programs take place in the Library's Program Room from 3:30 to 5:00pm.
Supplies and light refreshments will be provided by the library.
You must read at least one book per activity attended. A completed book form is your entry ticket.
- Thursday, July 9: Express your handy-man attributes by making duct tape purses, wallets or cell phone jackets.
- Thursday, July 16: Express your good taste as we dip fruit in chocolate.
- Thursday, July 23: Express your fashion sense. Create spray-painted T-Shirts (pre-registration required so we can buy enough shirts).
- Thursday, July 30: Express your inner rockstar with our PS2 Karaoke day.
- Thursday, August 6: Express your creative side by scrapbooking - bring your own photos and other memorabilia; we'll provide the scrapping supplies.
- Thursday, August 13: For all teens who have Expressed their love of books and knowledge by reading at least 6 books, we'll have a Pizza Party and Grand Prize Drawing.
Throughout the program: July 6 - August 12
There will be a photography display and contest running the entire length of the program. Participants should drop off their photographs, ready for display, no later than July 6. Patrons will be given the opportunity to vote on their favorite photograph. The photographer with the most votes will be awarded a $15 pizza gift certificate.
Photos must be library friendly as determined by Newport Public Library Librarians and Policies.
Photos will be available for photographers to pick up at the YA or Reference desks after August 12.

PRIZES
- Grab Bag – for every book form turned in, you get one grab from our miscellaneous gift grab bag and a raffle coupon.
Additional raffle tickets can be earned by writing a one-page, or longer, book review of the book(s) you read. Reviews may be posted on our webpage.
- Pizza – raffle coupons are entered into weekly drawings for a $15 pizza gift certificate.
Winners will be posted on our blog and facebook page. 
- Pizza Party and Grand Prize Drawing – all teens who complete the program will be invited to the final pizza party. Everyone who qualifies for the pizza party will be given a free book and entered into a raffle for a $50 or $30 gift certificate to a store or mall to be voted on by you and your peers.
Winner will be drawn at the end of the party. You do not have to be present to win. Winners will be posted on our blog and facebook pages.
