Join genealogist Margaret Fortier for tips on researching your Portuguese ancestry.
This lecture outlines the four waves of Portuguese immigration to the US, primarily to California, Massachusetts, and Hawaii. Naming patterns and name changes are illustrated as well as the flexible system of surnames. Using cluster research, US records, with special emphasis on the wealth of Portuguese-American newspapers, are examined for clues to locating the family in Portugal. Portuguese Catholic records and passports are also reviewed.
This in-person lecture will be held in the Friends Program room on the lower level of the library. Registration is required.
