GENERAL DISPLAY INFORMATION

The method for setting an item to display varies by department. Adult, YA, and Children’s tend to have different approaches to the length of time an individual item should remain part of a display. Each department chooses the item Status or OPAC Message field depending on its preferences and workflow. Status is clearable on check-in; OPAC Message is a “sticky” field that remains in the item record even when materials are checked-out and checked-in. Each setting also shows up differently in the OPAC (screenshots below). Note that NO DEPARTMENT should manually enter “Display” in the call number field.

ADULT DISPLAYS

Adult materials are marked display using the Item Status field. On check-in, this status is cleared and the items return to regular shelving. Reference staff replace holes in each display with new items as needed.

YA DISPLAYS

The YA department has two ongoing displays. One is thematic, with each title set to display using the Item Status field. The other highlights award-winning titles and is meant to be more durable; use the sticky OPAC Message field for items shelved here to ensure that they return to the display area after each checkout.

CHILDREN’S DISPLAYS

Children’s materials are marked display using the OPAC Message field. Using this setting ensures that any display items checked out by patrons will return to their display area – not to regular znja/znma shelving.
