Miss Rowena Recommends: Measuring Up by Lily LaMotte
The new graphic novel, Measuring Up, is about immigration, education, family, cooking and friendship. The cartoons show telling facial expressions and they are filled in with strong, solid colors. The print is easy to read.
Cici and her family have recently arrived in Seattle from a small town in Taiwan, where Cici’s grandmother stayed, because she could not get a green card. Trying to become American, Cici switches out the lunches that her mother makes — for sandwiches made with ingredients that her mother has never heard of before. Her mother buys the ingredients on Cici’s list and Cici makes her own sandwiches to bring to school.
Cici’s grandmother has taught her how to cook and to identify and use spices. At the same time that she is making friends at her new school, she is trying to figure out how to get the money for her grandmother to come visit to celebrate her 70th birthday. Entering a children’s cooking contest with a cash prize, Cici is determined to win. With expert advice from the librarian at her public library, Cici prepares for the grueling 6-Saturday long contest. I cannot tell you any more tidbits- except that I had to finish it in one sitting.
