Collection Criteria:

There are books on this topic in both the children’s and adult areas. General guidelines for deciding between the two locations are below. Any items warranting a closer look can be sent to the children’s dept. head for review.

CHILDREN’S ADULT
  • General works on child rearing, ages 0-12
  • Books on specific parenting topics (ages 0-12), provided they cover matters pertaining to the majority of children, not children with special needs
  • All works on fertility treatments, pregnancy, and childbirth
  • Books listing and/or providing the histories of first names
  • Guides for parenting teenagers
  • Any work providing guidance on raising a child with a learning, physical, or emotional disability (autism, ADHD, Down Syndrome, sensory disorders, dyslexia, etc.)
  • Books on traveling with children (shelve these in the TRAVEL neighborhood, with the appropriate codes)
  • Memoirs and essays on parenting
  • As of early 2020, Parenting magazine and Practical Homeschooling magazine are shelved with the adult periodicals

Location, New Status, and Codes:

The children’s parenting collection is housed in the two tall bookshelves by the preschool window, one on each side. Items go directly there after processing; they are not set to new. Note that they have an adult icode, not one that starts with the digit “3”:
